ABOUT FLYWHEEL WEIGHT LOSS

Shared Goals

First of all, what’s this flywheel all about?  A flywheel is a spinning wheel or disk that stores kinetic or rotational energy. They are often used to provide continuous output in systems where the energy source is not continuous. In other words, flywheels help to keep things spinning smoothly. Think of the potter’s wheel -- intermittently pressing the pedal causes the flywheel to spin continuously even though the actual pressing of the pedal happens at intervals. Think of the flywheel of an exercise bike, or a spinning top, or an engine using a flywheel to turn a crankshaft -- it takes effort to get a flywheel going, but with strategic input it starts to gather momentum, and over time it achieves a breakthrough which can keep going on its own effortlessly. 


This is our goal at Flywheel Weight Loss and Wellness. We want to help you get your flywheel going. This is weight loss. We also want to help you develop the habits and the momentum needed to keep it going. This is wellness. Success is not built with a single diet or a single plan. Rather, success comes in the act of turning the flywheel, investing the energy, gaining the momentum, and sticking with it long enough to achieve that breakthrough.

What to Expect

At the first visit, we discuss your medical and nutritional history in depth. By the end of the visit we formulate a customized plan. Then week to week we walk the journey together until you reach your goal. It is as simple as that. 

 

With each visit we evaluate and re-evaluate your plan, learn from the previous week, and anticipate the weeks ahead. Over the course of time, we will guide your nutritional training, help develop new habits and behaviors, address sleep, plan exercise, rest, and recovery, and continually evaluate the need for medications. Together we will learn as much about you and your physiology to get the weight off and keep it off. 

Nutritionally, we will help you come up with a specific and personalized nutritional plan that fits your needs whether it is paleo, keto, Atkins, whole30, intermittent fasting -- you name it. Philosophically, we believe in maximizing whole foods -- particularly organic and sustainable foods. However, we also believe that flexibility is important. To that end we can help you pick out over-the-counter supplements such as protein powders, ready-to-drink shakes, and bars that work with your plan. If you can learn what to look for and where to get it over-the-counter and at your local grocery store, your long-term success will improve.  

We also offer a full meal prep and delivery service through The Food Doctors, LLC.  The Food Doctors was co-founded by Dr. Paul Sarmiento and Chef Christopher Schlattman and is our equivalent to meal replacement bars and shakes. All of our meals have a specific amount of carbohydrate and a specific amount of protein across the menu. From one meal to the next, you can be sure that you are getting the same number of grams of carbs and proteins making each meal essentially interchangeable. This is not meant to be a one-diet-fits-all approach, but rather a building block system to help you where you need help most: protein prep, carbohydrate avoidance, environmental exposure, and decision fatigue.  Most importantly, Chef Christopher Schlattman is technically The Food Doctor-er.  He has made a professional living doctoring food to extract the most natural flavors.  While we avoid additives such as sugar, salt, and fat, we maximize the naturally occurring sugar, salts, and fats and utilize cooking techniques to give food its flavor. The Food Doctors uses real, whole, healthy food. It does not require any medical prescription, and it is open to the general public. For those who want a more comprehensive program, the combination of Flywheel Weight Loss & Wellness and full meal prep with the Food Doctors can be an effective option. Last but not least, at Flywheel we are physicians. While we primarily want you to think of us as your support, your coaches or guides along your weight loss and wellness journey, we are physicians specially trained and certified in obesity medicine. We know how to achieve weight loss, and we can provide medical tools to help get your flywheel going and keep it going. We medically monitor your progress with blood work and electrocardiograms as necessary. We specialize in medications such as phentermine, diethylpropion, metformin, topiramate, lorcaserin, buproprion/naltrexone, phentermine/topiramate, and liraglutide.  We also help carefully wean off chronic medications including medications for diabetes such as insulin and anti-hypertensives such as lisinopril, as able.

 

Having excess weight is having a chronic and complicated disease process. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a problem of willpower. It is a complex and problematic interaction between our environment and our physiology. Through The Food Doctors we directly tackle the external environment, and through Flywheel Weight Loss & Wellness we address the physiology of overweight and obesity. Knowing how complicated it can be, we will lend as much inertia as we can to get your wheel spinning!
